I was Sold Full (False) Coverage

There is no such thing as “full” coverage. Clients are routinely disappointed when the “full” coverage their insurance agent sold them will not cover them in certain situations. Full coverage is a term of art insurance companies use to sell insurance policies. Whether it is meant to or not, it can mislead people, and one thing I have learned without a doubt is that Insurance companies are great at hiding the ball. Insurance adjusters who tend to sell “full” coverage add collision and comprehensive coverage to the state requirement of General Liability coverage.

 Texas Requirements

The State of Texas requires at a minimum that drivers carry a General Liability auto insurance policy with $30k in coverage. This policy can be purchased from any large insurance company, such as Progressive or Geico, or even smaller companies, such as Pronto or Fred Loya.

 What is General Liability?

The purpose of General Liability insurance is that in the event that you caused a car wreck, the person you injure can be compensated for the harm. They could sue you to pay for their expenses, but your insurance policy is there instead to cover all of their expenses. Ultimately, this is protection for you (you don’t have to pay out of pocket) and the person you injure. However, in the event that you are in a car wreck that is not your fault and the other driver does not have insurance then General Liability doesn’t provide any coverage for you.

How do I better protect myself?

As stated above, drivers are required to purchase the minimum of General Liability Insurance. In addition, drivers should strongly consider adding Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM) to their policy. This coverage will cover your medical bills and damage to your car in the event someone else is responsible for the car wreck but did not have insurance or did not have enough insurance to pay for your medical bills. You can also add Personal Injury Protection (PIP) or MedPay to further alleviate the burden of medical bills.
